Brief

The project comprised two mirrored staircases with blackbutt balustrades and handrails that had to land perfectly flush with the corona wall below, following its radius corners and changing rakes. The design allowed no tolerance for deviation, which meant every component had to be measured, templated and installed to millimetre accuracy.

Large straight sections of balustrade capping weighed up to 200 kilograms each before being milled by hand to their final dimensions. Because the profile had to follow the existing corona exactly, none of the work could be CNC machined. Instead, every piece was templated both horizontally and vertically, then cut and refined by hand to achieve a continuous, seamless capping line.
